Missing In Action? Well sort of, but not really...I haven't even been gone on a long paddling trip out west or to maine like the past few summers...I'm .just keeping a low profile in these covid times. All of my shuttling has been confined to just a few individuals, or what has come to be known as a "shuttle pod". It has been kind of funny when I've met other wvwa members inadvertently at the put-in (greenbrier, top gauley, elk). Shuttle pods have made it particularly hard for those who live some distance away seeking shuttles.
As an organization we've canceled our summer events and we'll just have to see where we are in the fall. Weenie fest may even get canceled or reformatted!
So what have I been doing that's club positive? Providng some guidance to new paddlers, 6 in all, but it is hard to socially distance and aid swimmers. I've also been updating the comments sections on american whitewater. The aw wv river info webpage lists a number of streams as runnable when they aren't. The gauge correlations aren't accurate and there is other old beta listed as well and some streams have no comments at all. I've signed up to take a class to recertify with the aca, been working on my roll (although it is still a struggle) and set a goal of working to get at least level 3 continuation (roll and hand of god dependent). Implementing a two deep club structure is making progress largely due to other officers stepping up or out (Chuck is in the process of retiring but he's not there yet!) and I look forward to the time when I can post a trip on the forum and don't have to think about how many different people I'm willing to ride with. Then we will be able to boat and shuttle with who ever shows up but we aren't there yet. Each individual member must decide how much risk they are willing to accept- covid is a bit like whitewater in that regard.
