The WVWA is offering a Level 3-4 Instructor Training Course for whitewater kayaking. The primary difference between level three certification (class II) and level four certification (class III) is the difficulty of the whitewater that you are certified to teach on. Chris Wing of H2O Dreams will be providing the instruction. He will also have another instructor trainer assisting him. The dates of the clinic will be 3/24/17-3/26/17 and 3/31-4/2/17. Instruction begins on Friday evening. We are thinking the clinic will be held at Camp Caesar in Webster County. The advantage of that location is that cabins are available there, there is space for meeting-classroom instruction and its proximity to the Cherry and Elk Rivers. The lodging has yet to be finalized at camp caesar however. The cost of the instruction for the clinic is $475.00 At the Jan. meeting the club agreed to pay $150.00 of the initial registration fee for each participating wvwa member that registers. The class is limited to ten and requires preregistration and payment. So you will need to pay H20 Dreams $325 and have paid your membership dues to wvwa for 2017 . This does not include the cost of lodging or meals for the clinic, or any aca membership or certification fees. The WVWA also agreed at the Jan. meeting to offer further reimbursement as instructor trainer participants teach wvwa clinics: $300.00 for teaching two wvwa clinics or $150 for teaching one clinic. In other words, if you attend and complete the two training weekends successfully and teach two clinics for the wvwa, you can get all but $25.00 of the clinic instruction cost reimbursed. You will not be reimbursed for other costs- like food, lodging, gas or a new boat to teach out of! The following is from Chris Wing:. Register for the course, use the coupon code WILDWV to bring it down to the course cost that we discussed for folks, this will be the $475 - $150 = $325 registrationchoose the webster springs option homeworkFolks should follow this link to start doing their homework for the course. The sooner they register the sooner they can get threaded in to further preparations as I like to have a phone call with folks after registration. Again, I have no problems with capping this course at 10. I am also posting this course on the ACA website as it is not often I get up to that area. -- Chris Wing | Founder and Director H2o Dreams LLC | Creative, Passionate, Driven 828.749.9369

Tony, since he is posting this on the ACA site, can we get him to hold a number of spots for our club members till a certain date? Would hate for a member to get shut out if there were a flood of responses from outside the WVWA.

I think its a first come, first serve type of thing. In order to get the reduced price we need between 8-10 people to sign up. I think there is some thought on his part that it might be good to get a mix of a few other folks from various backgrounds but he understands the bulk of the participants will be from wvwa.

Sorry I missed the last meeting, but didn't we agree at a previous meeting that to receive reimbursement for instructing a clinic, the clinic must be approved by the officers and sanctioned as a WVWA clinic. This would prevent 10 people trying to hold 20 clinics in a year just to receive the reimbursement. We do not need that many clinics and with that many trained, it could be you will not receive reimbursement. Anyone trained can of course offer a clinic any time as long as it is not associated with WVWA with the intent of collecting reimbursement. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I'd be real happy if we had enough wvwa folks to sign up for 20 clinics in a year. Lately we've only had one clinic per year- the beginners clinic. I'm looking to double that this year with two clinics- one beginners and one intermediate, I'd love it if we had more demand for clinics. Part of the cost that the club will incur for the instructor training will be made back by the increase in fees at the clinics - for starters $30.00 instead of 20.00 per head at the beginners clinic. Hopefully, the participants will get some good pointers for their extra ten dollars a head. As far as vetting goes- the two guys that have signed up thus far are real quality guys- Harry Netzer (current wvwa president, beginner clinic coordinator ) and (former president, beginner clinic coordinator) Tony Daniel, I know them both and will vouch for 'em.

Hey ya'll, Chris Wing here. Firstly, many thanks to Tony for reaching out and setting up the time and helping me with logistics to run a program for you all and your area. We just returned from a scouting trip to figure out logistics, timing, sections of river, etc. and felt we have the opportunity to offer a really solid program making the most use of your time. Apologies to those that tried linking up with us to no avail, I think I mentioned to at least one person that many times these trips are not pleasure cruises for us, this is our work. Again, sorry for not linking up. I am going to be putting together the full course outline shortly and will provide the course breakdown here. All said, I highly encourage folks to register early to get started on the course materials. The is a wealth of information we will cover throughout the course and you don't want to fall behind. For those that are still on the fence about taking the course you can contact me directly by email at chris@whitewaterdreams.com or by our office phone at 828.749.9369. We are offering the club a special discount for this course, and by the sounds of it a portion of your course costs are going to be paid for, meaning your out of pocket cost (initially) is only $325. We offer this course on our home rivers with our logistics for $575. This cost is considerably lower than anywhere else you will find it, and I guarantee we offer one of the best courses available. You will still have to purchase you ACA/SEIC dues and your ACA manual.Definitive outcomes for your course:Your skills will improve dramatically and you will develop a mind for training yourself as well as others. You will have a greater understanding of the physics and a way to communicate those physics effectively. You will learn to be a contributor to your paddling group and know how you can fit in instead of feeling out. You will become a far more effective communicator on the water, I can't help you off the river Potential outcomes for the course:You will be certified to L4 or a level below. You will be certified with a L1-L3 with a continuation to the level above. A continuation means you showed a skill(s) deficiency that can easily be demonstrated at a later time to receive the higher certification. Generally for one skill or minor touch ups. You can receive no certification. I highly recommend reading our study guide to get you started. Once you read through this register so we can get you started through the process. I want to make room for WVWA folks first, but aas we move closer to the date I will be trying to fill the course, so don't hesitate! Many thanks in advance, Chris

We are off to a slow start. 2 people signed up so far after 12 days. Chris is continuing to advertise outside of the wvwa so this class can happen. My hope was and still is that we can increase the quality of instruction in the club- conventional past wisdom has been that you should be able to paddle one class of difficulty above what you teach others on. So if you're comfortable on class III then you could teach on class II. If your comfortable on class IV then you teach on class III.
This clinic will help define those criteria, roles, and skills even more.
Goals for this instructor clinic are to 1) get some intermediate instructors so we could actually offer an intermediate clinic again. 2)Increase the quality of instruction at the beginner clinics, and 3) increase the instruction and safety at other events, trips, particularly science camper, and pool sessions.
I'm not the ideal participant for this clinic. I have some skill deficits partially due to laziness and some physical limitations Not only can I not roll reliably on two sides, but I often struggle on just one side (but hey I struggle to tie my shoes as well). So why did I sign up? Because ultimately the club benefits when people like me show up, organize, teach and work with others even if we are limited in what we can do. Rarely, am I most skilled person on the river, but I don't have to be, as long as I'm paddling and helping within my skill set, and doing it all on water that is appropriate for me. So expect to be pushed a bit, fail at some things but ultimately, I think the end result will be worth it, both personally and for the club.
So in short, I don't know if the class IV or V paddlers in the club are going to sign up for this. Harry certainly has and that's a good start towards the club goal of resurrecting the intermediate clinic. I'd like to see others with that skill set who have a desire to "instruct" join us as well.
But perhaps you're more like me. You've read the ACA criteria and you have "a hole or two in your game". That "hand of god thing" is looking pretty rough for me to pull off as well. So I figure "those holes" will be exposed real quick- so I'm up for a bit of a wild ride, I'll be out of my comfort zone, bottom line- I need some others to sign up and save my a@@ when I swim!. I'll be there for you if you're there for me, if we both swim, well heck that's what the paid professionals are for! There is one skill after all that I excel at- self preservation!. Come on, help a paddlin' buddy out and sign up for the class.

I'll vouch for that Tom guy as well. We got someone who can not only paddle but can also rap and add cartoon animation to river videos.

Good morning all! We are about 1 month out from the start of our ACA L4 Whitewater Course up in Webster County and we are excited! We have the minimum required number of folks to run the course and I will be sending out course prep/homework to those folks by the end of the weekend. I spoke with Tony this morning and him and I discussed how a there is a normal amount of fence sitting for a course like this. That said, I would like to make myself and Lydia available by phone to discuss if this is a fit for you. We won't simply try to sell spots either, we are committed to running an excellent course and that includes having folks there that want to be there and are ready to put the work in to improve themselves. Check out Lyd's letter to an instructor here: www.whitewaterdreams.com/an-open-letter-to-a-future-instructor/We would need to schedule a time to talk on the phone to discuss more. If you feel that this isn't quite the time but would still like to take this course with us, we are offering two others here in North Carolina this spring. However, those courses will not have the same discount we have offered in this course with the WVWA. So if it's a $$$ thing, this is one of the most affordable options there are for what I would argue the best training experience available (but you knew I was going to say that, didn't you?). I look forward to hearing from folks soon! Chris Wing chris@whitewaterdreams.com 828.749.9369
