I haven't flushed out the details yet but am leaning towards the greenbrier river. This is a great opportunity for new boaters and anyone who just wants to practice eddy turns, peelouts and basic strokes. Saturday the focus is on instruction while on Sunday we cover skills associated with running a trip: reading water, lead and sweep boat, shuttles. Hello Tony, I need dates and times for meeting and put in locations and I would love to attend.

Hey Donn we'll figure out the times and meeting location and post it up on website in the next couple of weeks. Camping is always an option and would start on Fri. evening on June 4th, Sat. June 5th and Sun June 6th we'll work on skills. We will more than likely be on the greenbrier river near Alderson (Fort Spring access).

This sounds really good, I've been wanting to do a camping river run and working with beginners makes it even better. What a great idea. Are you planning to do this at any other times this summer, I think I have a rescue clinic on that weekend?

Tony, I should be up for my vaccine around the time I get back from the canyon trip; if all that comes together I'll try to host a Top Gauley/Donaldson camp/paddle event--with the likeliest time being around the first part of May. Covid restrictions still to be followed.

Hey Caroline, I'm aware Mike Sharp is doing a ww rescue clinic that same weekend but that weekend fits my schedule as I'm taking a recert class the next weekend and then heading west to paddle.

Hi Tony - Sounds great to me. Mark's a total beginner, but super coordinated and athletic. And it's been 15 years since I paddled a hardshell, and a weekend on the Greenbrier sounds delightful. Many thanks to Cliff for providing the camping. ~ Kathy

Answers to frequently asked questions:
Do I have to camp? No but we will be doing a 45 minute talk at Cliff's place on Sat. prior to the on water instruction. On Saturday we should begin actual paddle instruction around 11 am at the Fort Spring access. You can only skip the morning meeting with prior permission. You will need to go over some basic safety stuff (online: teams or zoom) with me before hitting the water. On Sunday we will meet right at the Fort Spring river access at 10:00 am. Expect to work on skills (strokes, eddy turns, peel-outs, ferries) on Sat. and then apply what you've learned on Sunday.
Who can go on Sunday's trip? Sunday's trip is open to all club members, their families, and even your non $20 friends. It is a more relaxing day than Saturday. Saturday will wear you out. Sunday's instruction will be much more laid back and focus on trip dynamics. You can just show up for free on Sunday if you want to. No limit on the size of Sunday's trip.
What do I need to Bring? In addition to your boating gear be prepared to camp, bring food, beverages, a camp chair, and dry clothes. Sun Screen, a hat, wet shoes (like tennis shoes) are also handy.
What's the schedule?
Here's a tentative schedule
Fri. Go to Cliffs set up camp Fri late afternoon/evening- some of us will make a quick run on the greenbrier to scout the venue for any new hazards before the clinic. We will end at Stuarts with dinner at Stuarts (you are welcome to paddle with us if you have prior experience with this stretch of river and Stuarts is certainly an experience in and of itself so join us for unpredictable food, sometimes sketchy service, and a view of the river. Sat. 9:00 am safety talk and introductions (at Cliffs) Sat: 11:00 instruction begins at the Fort Spring Access Sat: 12:30 lunch on the water Sat: 3:30 instruction ends- back to Cliffs Sat: 6:00 covered dish dinner at Cliffs Sun. around 8:30 to 9:00 o'clockish Breakfast at the Big Wheel in Alderson Sun. 10:00 am meeting at the put-in Fort Springs (some of us will set shuttle on the way from the Big Wheel) Sun. 3:00 pm we should be on the road back to Cliffs or headed to home (depending upon if you broke camp before leaving Cliffs)
If I've already taken the clinic can I take it again? Yes, we all benefit from repeatedly practicing strokes, doing eddy turns, peel-outs, and ferries. You can even come back as a "safety boater" and skip the fee.
Will I have to wear a mask? We will follow whatever guidelines the state of WV has in place at the beginning June. Generally, we are able to socially distance on the water while paddling. So a mask is not required then. Many paddlers have neck gaiters they can pull up if they find themselves in close proximity to another individual.

I can't wait for my first swim of the weekend! For those who will be participating in the Friday scout paddle, you are welcome to arrive Thursday eve and set up. Anyone preferring to spend the nite Sunday are welcome to do so.
My place is about a 20 minute ride from the Stuarts takeout, located near Blue Sulphur Springs. For reference, most folks will exit I-64 via Exit 150, Dawson, or 161, Alta/Alderson. I will provide full directions well before the event.
My place accommodates many tents and some small RVs of 20 feet or less. 2 spots have access to electric and Wes found a way to get water. I will make available a half bathroom for your use, equipped with many cleaning products reflecting the times. If you use the bathroom, use the cleaning products. (if you really don't like to camp, contact me on the message board.)
There are 2 fire pits to support small and large meetings and the consumption of pbr's and s'mores. I have a couple of small grills and plenty of firewood. Can we do a safe potluck dinner Saturday? Hope so.
As with the clinic in general, all state Covid safety guidelines will apply. For your information, I will receive my 2nd vaccine dose on March 31.

Will the registration link work for non-members? If the newbies want to join the club to get the discount on the clinic, how do they do that?

Will the registration link work for non-members? If the newbies want to join the club to get the discount on the clinic, how do they do that? The registration link will ask if the person registering is a club member. If their email address is in the roster, they will be prompted to pay the fee for a club member. If not, they will be prompted to pay the non-member fee. It is necessary to join the club and pay the dues before registering for the clinic. You must also wait until the payment for you dues is received and confirmed. Otherwise, you will be asked to pay the non-member amount.
