I wanted to start a thread for instructors, safety boaters, and volunteers for the upcoming clinic. You do not have to be aca certified to teach so long as you are "a qualified assistant." We need all kinds of help: instruction, safety boating, shuttle, emergency response, selling merchandise, helping with registration, gear etc.
So for me personally ( with a level two river kayaking cert.) I could lead class I instruction (level 2), and could be an assistant in class II (level 3) but perhaps just a safety boater in class III (level 4). The clinic has been registered with the aca as a Level 3 River Kayaking Skills Clinic. Some participants will fall closer to the level 2 designation while others may dip their toes into the level 4 (class III) designation. David Bell is the coordinator with the ACA for this clinic. Tom Conley (level 4) is the Lead Instructor. All help is wanted and encouraged regardless of certs. just make sure you're within your comfort level of paddling and physical abilities.
Here's what I know thus far on 4/24. Tom Connelly Lead Instructor (level 4 cert) Bill Chambers (level 3 cert) Tony Daniel I plan to conduct wet exits, paddle strokes in either lake or class I river environment for most of Saturday David Bell ( level 2 cert) Wes Barthwick (level 2 cert) Ruth Bell (qualified assistant) Mary Spikowski (qualified assistant) may want to stay near her daughter Scott Meadows (qualified assistant) Bob Anderson (qualified assistant)
possibles: Jerry S. and family? (qualified assistants)
Brian from team rr has shared with me that Craig (qualified assistant) is also planning to attend.
I'd also like to get some other folks out- Chuck B. Charlie R, Dave K. and Dustin have all been involved with past clinics and would add a lot. Feel free to encourage them by email, call, or message them.
Dan W. has other comittments. He will be missed. He's been so gracious in the past to supply extra boats, firewood, a meeting place, instruct, or safety boat. Basically anything we needed Dan has stepped up and provided.

I'd enjoy this but will be traveling that weekend. I've suggested that Brian get 1-2 of his HS senior friends to sign up. They've expressed interest in joining his WW activity.

I can help and instruct wherever needed. My boating time has been minimal in the past year or so, so skills may be rusty. I will plan to polish them up this month. Both roll styles are still solid, and I do not mind helping with one on one roll sessions if any are interested. I will have my truck for boat hauling. Plan to bring an extra Dagger Mamba Small (120#-170#) and Dagger Juice (110# - 190#) and full gear for each. Will also throw in at least one ducky.

I drove to radford virginia and got my cpr and first aid current. American Red Cross in Beckley isn't doing hands on classes currently. The offerings in charleston didn't jive with my schedule so I did the drive to va.

right now if we were grouping based on registration info and my direct knowledge from paddling with folks "we have 9 intermediates and 11 beginners" . So we are looking at roughly 1/2 of each.

It looks like we have a couple more folks signed up on the waiting list. If we can get more safety boaters, informal instructors then we could get everyone in the class.

I don't see anyone on the waiting list. We currently have 24 registered. Two of them are in pending status because they are (supposedly) mailing me a check.. They will be updated from pending to paid status when I receive their checks.

I messed up and didn't realize it until the 24th registration came in. I changed the max count to 24. BTW, I just deposited one of the checks so we only have one whose payment i s pending.

So is the plan to have official instruction both the 25th and 26th? In the past, the second day was a club trip. Possibly an "instructed" trip this year?

yes, two days of instruction, first day working on strokes and eddy turns, ferries etc. 2nd day more of a trip format.

Club trips: Fri. May 24 and Mon. (Memorial Day) May 27th. I am going to keep this extremely simple. For both trips, we will meet at 10:00 at the Curtain Bridge which is located at the confluence of the Cherry and Top Gauley. Which stretch of river (Cherry, Top Gauley, Camden on the Gauley, or paddling from or to Donaldson will be decided at the meeting spot, and also understand that two trips may ensue, an intermediate trip and a beginner trip. The particular stretch selected will be water dependent. The meeting spot will not change unless the water goes below 11.2 feet on the Craigsville Gauge. If that happens then all bets are off. Perhaps travel to New or another location if that happens.

club trip info for fri. May 24 and mon may 27 These trips are a pre and post trip sandwiched around the beginner/intermediate clinic. I am going to keep this extremely simple. For both trips, we will meet at 10:00 am at the Curtain Bridge which is located at the confluence of the Cherry and Gauley. Which stretch of river (Cherry, Top Gauley, Camden on the Gauley, or paddling from or to Donaldson will be decided at the meeting spot, and also understand that two different trips may ensue on Monday, an intermediate trip and a beginner trip to accomodate the varying skill levels. The friday trip will be a scouting trip designed for the instructors or helpers to scout the river for the intermediate paddlers taking the clinic. Others are welcome to join in on friday but need to be self sufficient on class II-III water. As stated before, the particular stretch selected will be water dependent. The meeting spot will not change unless the water goes below 11.2 feet on the Craigsville Gauge. If that happens then all bets are off on either day. There is a good chance the greenbrier or a stretch of the upper new will be utilized if that occurs.

Tony has 5 campsites at Bishops Knob. You have to drive there from the Richwood side - the road is out from the other direction. We will meet at 10:00 at Bishops Knob for the clinic.

What road, specifically is out? I don't know what the Richwood side means, I just rely on the GPS to take me there, so I need to know what road is out.

Maria and I are 6 hours away since we put everything on hold until we had a destination to drive to. Please hold a campsite for us. Thanks.

Shawn, go thru Richwood, at end of town the road takes a 90° turn. Something like a 1/4 mile on left look for Cranberry river sign. Follow signs to Bishop Knob. Long drive.
