Side note: There was an article in the Gazzetta that said that the International students will not be at this year's Science Camp. Their visas' got screwed up and they can't get them fixed in time. Sad situation there.....

Betty and I will meet you at Glade Creek. We will have our own kayaks and one extra hard shell (XP/10) and a double duckie. We will have extra PFDs, paddles and an extra skirt and helmet. We cannot commit to kayaking Sunday, but you can use our equiptment if we can't make Sunday. We are members of the ACA. Take Care see you Saturday 10am at GC.

I'll be there with an extra helmet, kayak, and paddle. I'm also definitely interested in doing a Friday afternoon/evening gorge run!

I have been getting asked about the details for this weekend's science campers.
We have the campground at the Ace Gear Shop in Fayetteville. You can camp Friday and Saturday nights. I will be there Friday evening, and there is some talk of trips on the Upper New, and Lower New.
I'd like all the volunteers that are bringing gear to load to start arriving at Glade Creek put-in around 9:30am. This will give us time to get everything ready and organized before the Science Campers arrive.
The Campers will eat lunch, then we will give them a safety briefing and break them into Pods. There will be 6 pods of 5 science campers. It is up to the pod leader to ensure each camper performs a wet exit before continuing down to the first rapid.
I'd like to say thanks to all the people that have signed up or offered to loan their gear. I look forward to having a fun and safe weekend.

Linda, It looks like we should have enough volunteers and gear, if everyone shows up.

I am happy to help out on Saturday. Only have a skirt, paddle and helmet to offer. Also can bring a trailer if that would help. - Bill Mehle

Bill, That would be terrific. I don't think we will need an extra trailer, we have one trailer and several trucks to help haul gear.

Base camp has been established. Plenty of firewood. KC got the power on at the Pavillion. We have some lights and one working outlet. Got the place as cleaned up as I could. Somehow I came up short one PFD. If anyone has an extra, please bring it. My truck and trailer are completely unloaded so people can start loading boats and gear Friday evening.

Harry, the Hinto guage is at 7100 CFS and will rise by another 500CFS by mid day. Yesterdays run started at appx 3600 CFS and ended at 2800 CFS. It appears to me the river is too high to take the students out today. I will not be driving over. I have all my equiptment except 1 air bag with my name on it. The rise in the New is because of the Greenbrier. ,it si flowing at 6700 at the Hilldale Guage and rising. The release from the Bluestone damn is only 480 CFS. Bluefield will need to increase it's discharge soon, so the New may get even higher than 7500 CFS. Take Care had a great day yesterday.

A RIVETING DISSERTATION ON THE FLOW DYNAMICS OF THE GREENBRIER AND NEW RIVERS AND THE IMPACT ON THE 2015 SCIENCE CAMPERS TRIP (SUNDAY JUNE 28)
OK folks, I had some input for Harry this morning on the likely rise in river levels. It may prove useful for future events, so I thought I would send it out. Also, if someone has more time than I had between 6:30 and 8:30 this morning, they might come up with some better numbers. I looked at four gauges, Alderson, Hilldale, Hinton and Thurmond during the month of April, 2015. I noted five times when the Greenbrier rose substantially. The dates were April 4, 10, 15, 21 and 27. Measuring from peak flow to peak flow (not start of rise to start of rise), I estimated the following: - -Alderson to Hilldale - 4.5 hours -Hilldale to Hinton - 2 hours -Hinton to Thurmond - 4 hours - With Glade Creek being about halfway between Hinton and Thurmond, I figure 2 hours from Hinton to Glade Creek. - I also noted that the peaks tend to be larger, the further down the river the bubble goes. Typically, the peak at Hilldale is 20-25% larger than at Alderson. Hinton is 50-75% more than Alderson and Thurmond is 75-100% more than Alderson.
This morning at 2am, Alderson began rising from 5500cfs at a rate of 2,000+ cfs/hour. By 5:30am it was at 14,000cfs. The rough correlation above predicted that there would be well over 20,000 cfs at Glade Creek by 2pm. It also predicted Hilldale would reach 17,000cfs by 10am (it actually was 15,500 at 10 and peaked at 17,000 at noon). Further prediction was 22,000cfs at Hinton at noon (actually 14,000). Hinton peaked at 17,700 cfs at 4:30pm, so it appears that there was unusually little inflow between Hilldale and Hinton, including the dam release. Hinton exceeded 12,000 cfs around 10:30 this morning, so Glade Creek probably had a similar flow just after noon, about the time we would have been heading downstream with the Science Campers. It would have continued to rise to 18,000 cfs or so by 6pm. I would have been rather nervous shepherding the Science Campers down the river in these conditions. - The gauge on the Dries started going up at 6:45pm, so Thurmond probably exceeded 10,000cfs a while earlier. - Comments on issues with this analysis. - The Hinton and Thurmond gauges include releases from Bluestone Dam as well as flow from the Greenbrier River. High water events in the Greenbrier watershed can also impact that of the New and prompt the Corps to change the release flow. Today the release was reduced to 500cfs, an extraordinary low flow that is practically zero. The inlet flow to the lake was much higher, so I don't understand the low release (maybe the damkeeper's child is a Science Camper or the Science Campers are VERY good at hacking control systems). I do not have release info on the dates in April for which I collected data. This can be a big impact and probably accounts for a lot of the variability in the data. It probably makes more difference in the flow factors than the time lags. - The events I considered in April had a wide variety of peak flows, ranging from 20,000 cfs to 64,000 cfs at Thurmond. - There was considerable variation in lag times between peak flows at the various gauges. I tried to estimate typical values. - The Thurmond gauge has been dead for over two days now. Apparently the thousands of special funding contributed to this gauge last year do not provide any special reliability or maintenance response (but somebody in the USGS probably got a nice raise for squeezing more $$ out of the public). The Thurmond part of the estimation scheme above cannot be checked now. - In summary, with this analysis suggesting that the flow at Glade Creek was very likely to exceed 12,000 cfs in the early afternoon, maybe even by noon, we cancelled the second Science Campers run. Considerate second-guessing and suggested improvements for this analysis are welcome. This situation may happen again and a good understanding of the dynamics here could make future decision-making more effective. - If you have read this far, you are probably now well-primed for a good sleep.

I think it was a very good call to call it off, to much disappointment to the campers but they would've froze as well with the wind blowing, cooler air and water temps! I was chilly on the cherry with some gear on! Good call!

Thank you Freeze for helping me make the call. With the Thurmond gauge being out of service I wasn't sure what the levels were. It was very disappointing for the campers as well as everyone that volunteered their time to help out.
I want to give a big thanks to everyone that helped out by being on the water, donating their kayaks and gear, and organizing everything off the water.
I hope everyone was able to get their belongings back. Post on here if you ended up with anyone's gear or if you are missing anything.

okay Freeze has a helmet of mine (used to belong to Chuck B. I got it off the swap table a couple of christmases ago).
Matt Tucker one throw rope
I'll get this stuff at the next paddling trip or pool session, or anniversary party when we meet up, no worries
at large: a couple of old blue flotation bags- rumor has it that one of the float bags was put into a boat resembling a blue mamba. I got my name written on both of them real big. They're pretty trashed (one is even tied on the end) but still hold air- so if you brought a loaner boat without flotation you might want to look inside.
