The water levels on the New River as of this Tuesday morning show alll sections to be above recommended according to American Whitewater page. My partner and I are looking for a class 2/3 run. At normal levels this stretch qualifies for sure. What do you anticipate by Saturday’s picnic? Also, the picnic is to be at the take out, Sandbar..am I correct since I don’t recall picnic tables there but may be mistaken. Many thanks. Craig Wilger

I’ve observed the Anthony creek gauge as currently being off by about a foot from what it previously read. It’s been like that for about a year, since it had been offline for about 6 months, then came back. It’s showing higher than it did before, so the minimum runnable level now appears to be 2’ rather than the 1’ suggested on AW. Tim B and I ran it at 1.9’ back in the spring, and that last half mile or so had some spots that took some plastic off our hulls. I’m actually considering trying to run it tomorrow after I meet with a client, but that depends if I can find either someone to run it with, or someone to shuttle me.

thanks for the update Tony O, perhaps I should rethink this whole thing (again), Anthony's probably ;isn't gonna hold at 2 ft, was hoping to make one foot on that gauge- of course greenbrier was and is the back up plan for that venue- tough finding a good class II destination, with camping nearby. My first thought was Ft. Spring to Alderson, but admittedly, I'm a little burnt out on the camping at the greenbrier campground (from all the beginner clinics). Still early though, it's only Tues evening- can reshuffle at least one more time before coming up with the final plan. I do expect local levels to drop out but the new river to remain high even by the weekend.
Bluestone/camp creek too low. Birch and buffalo are good now but likely to drop out by the weekend./ Eyeing the shavers fork and seeing how quick it is dropping out- the goal is to come up with a scenic class II stream, somewhat short in length so you can enjoy a picnic afterwards (located in a campground) probably won't decide anything until Thursday. How's that for weenyin' out! Open to suggestions.

Ok, let me throw this into the mix as an option for people to use as a base camp Friday through Sunday if you are planning on paddling Anthony Creek: I have a camp on the Greenbrier River at the mouth of Spring Creek about 7 miles upriver from Anthony/Blue Bend and about 3 miles downstream from Renick. My camp is about 1 acre and is located between the Greenbrier River Trail and the creek/river. Camp has a screened in 20' x 30' shelter with a fireplace, a bathroom including hot water and shower. There's even a kitchen sink. There's plenty of flat place for tent camping and parking RV's; although I can't accommodate electricity for everyone's 30 amp plug ins; there's a 30 foot long tow behind trailer already on site. There's a fire ring. Bring bicycles if you wish; it's approximately mile 21.5 on the trail which borders the property. We often paddle the 7 mile stretch of the Greenbrier River down to Anthony which looks to be runable level through the weekend; albeit a class 1/2 run it's enjoyable. We also paddle stretches from Watoga Park or Rorer or Renick on a frequent basis since they are easy shuttles.) The Greenbrier below that like Ft. Spring to Alderson should be in good shape for water. Anthony Creek and Blue Bend are about 20 minutes from my camp via roadway. My partner and I paddled Anthony Creek this summer when the water level was marginal and yes, we left some plastic along the way including the 90 degree right hand bend in the creek which must look awesome at high water. My camp is located at 200 Old Saw Mill Road (we just got a street sign, no numbers yet but it may be on navigation systems) which can be reached by driving north on 219 from the intersection of I-64 with 219 at Lewisburg approximately 10.5 miles to Spring Creek Station road (just north of the town of Frankford), (taking the right hand "turn"onto Sp. Ck. Station Road from 219) traveling about 2 miles through the country side (pass McKeever road on the right) and dropping down to the river; turning right on "Old Spring Creek Depot Road" (still paved) for 200 yards; then left on Old Saw Mill Road (graveled) back upriver for 150 yards. If you miss the right hand turn on Old Spring Creek Depot Road you'll cross the bridge over Spring Creek---look to your right and you'll see the Greenbrier River Trail bridge crossing and I'm just downstream of that on the right bank.) Turn around . If this doesn't work this time we can consider it for the future runs on Anthony Creek or the Greenbrier River. I'm right on Spring Creek which has a 5 mile or section or so from 219 to my property and sections above that which are runable but narrow and may have some strainers including fences across which make me want to walk it before attempting a blind paddle. I live in Charleston but spend about half my time in the Lewisburg area at the camp or in Lewisburg itself. I plan on relocating to Lewisburg next year. Anyone in that area or wanting to paddle nearby Class 2/3 stuff....I'd be interested. Craig Wilger

Craig, I’m currently looking at real estate back in Greenbrier county. Could be a while before we make the move, but once we do, I’ll let you know. I have a hell of a time finding last minute boaters when Anthony and second creek run. But I’m over there almost every day for work

I look forward to seeing folks at my Spring Creek, Greenbrier Camp on Saturday morning around 11 am (directions in another comment). If anyone needs to contact me, please do so on this forum before Friday noon when I will head toward Lewisburg from Charleston. I may not stay at the camp on Friday night but others are welcome to if they wish; please come before dark so I can greet you and let me know you are coming so I can look for you. Unfortunately my phone was recently stolen and I am currently without, like being cast into the great communication ocean without a paddle. There are a couple of refrigerators at the camp in case anyone needs. Water is good for drinking, showering, etc. If anyone has dry firewood and it's convenient to throw in a bit and bring, feel free. I'll bring some from home, but most of what I have on the river is not dry yet. There's a swing in arm for cooking over the fireplace inside the shelter in a cast iron pot if desired, an outdoor fire ring with a grill and a free standing grill. You are invited to camp, bring bicycles if you wish since the Greenbrier Trail borders the property. There are a variety of water trips available from this location. If anyone wants to try paddle boarding there's about a hundred yards of a flat pool on Spring Creek at the property and I'll bring a couple of inflatable stand up paddle boards. The gauge at Buckeye on the Greenbrier indicates that the water level should hold steady at or above 3 so there will be enough water to do various sections depending on people's desires; they are all easy class 1 & 2 but we can go downriver to Fort Springs, etc. if desired for more.
I'll be driving a Black Honda Pilot and the camp has a 30 foot white, pull behind trailer bearing the name "Adirondack" like the mountains. There's a big stone fireplace and chimney sticking up above the top of the screened in shelter so if you see these, you're at the right place! Come play. I've tried to download pictures without success so use your imagination.
Craig Wilger I think we are bringing fresh made potato salad and maybe a green salad.

Looks kind of flash floody over there. Anthony creek is at 9’. Y’all still running the greenbrier? If not, I’m trying to find a last minute Bluestone crew

Mike, I may have waited too late to make the call on Bluestone. We should already be setting shuttle. I wasn’t expecting it to come up, so I didn’t even check the level until I saw flooding in other places. The damn shuttle is almost a 2 hour round trip.
