Matt Dameron - if you want to learn to whitewater kayak, it's best to take the clinic in a whitewater kayak. You'll want to be outfitted to a boat so that you are "wearing" it, so that you can properly lean the boat on it's edges to do eddy turns - which you can't do in a boat that doesn't allow you to have thigh braces. That's where the concern is for you & others wondering. You can probably "survive" the clinic & the stretch of river in almost anything - but if you want to learn the basics of whitewater kayaking properly in order to advance to tougher rivers, you'll want the proper equipment. So it's up to everyone on what their actual goals are for taking the clinic.

I can loan a small Burn and associated gear. I will not be able to make it to the beginners clinic.

Matt, katana is a capable boat, do you have it and a skirt for it? It is currently in layaway. My original plan was to basically stick to class 2ish water, stuff I plan on fishing. With the way the rivers are going, I may be forced into doing 3's just to be able to float and fish this summer. That was the reasoning behind the crossover..... float, fish, and camp. I am 5'11", 215 pounds, 34" inseam, and wear a 13 shoe.... so I need a big boat.

Try the xp. It will probably perform a lot like a katana and give you an idea of what to expect out of your new boat. I started out in a Dagger Approach which is the predecessor to the Katana. I've run class three with it and it served me well.

It was a great weekend on the water and great to meet a lot of the club members! I had a great time out there and look forward to paddling with you all again in the future! It was really neat to see everyone improving...I could see huge differences in everyone's paddling skills just in those two days. That's awesome! Just imagine how much you'll improve if you keep paddling all summer!

Great time this weekend! Had a blast all weekend, although worn out today from the combo Greenbrier/Upper New trip yesterday. I'll second Rick, it was good seeing everyone progressing yesterday. Our little sort-of-early trip on the Greenbrier went really well. Everyone was working the river, and we took our time playing every opportunity we got. Lots of eddying, peel outs, ferrying, even a few that gave surfing a try. Woody and Derek did great on the GC>GVSB trip afterwards. Glad they were up for it and able to get some time on the New.
Tony, I have two of your helmets from Ron and Leah. I'll drop them off sometime this week.

Ok...not sure what I'm doing here but I'm going to TRY to post a link to a Photobucket album of the trip that I made. I THINK I made it public so you could all see it and hopefully you enjoy...unfortunately I did not get pics of everyone... I forgot to take my camera out on Saturday. But I did get a few good ones of a bunch of you on Sunday. So enjoy! (if the link works) Edit: Still trying to figure the link thing out.. to be continued. Edit #2: Figured it out and put it where it belongs...on the pics and video forum page. Go there and check it out.

Rick, that link just links back to the thread for me. Our Sunday group should be well documented!

Ha! I think I've seen four versions of the link so far! I've got some of our group pics posted under Woody's thread in the pics and video section. I struggled to get it to link also.

Does anyone know if I use the HTML Embed or the Flash Embed or neither when copying the link from Photobucket? I'm clicking on the little world icon and trying to copy the link there. Correct?

I used the slideshow link. Then hit the hyperlink button at the top of your message (looks like a globe). Add a title to the top box. Delete the http:// from the bottom box so it is empty and paste the link

Ron and I had such a great time this weekend! It was awesome meeting so many kind people with common interests!! We can not wait to check out the upper new the 20th! See ya soon! Glad he liked the boat, I'm a fan of Jackson boats, others hate them. Sounds like he was looking for a river runner. He may be at the upper end of the weight range for the Hero, but weight ranges are pretty subjective. He's going to be right in the middle of large and medium size boats, and personally I like to size up for the extra volume on a river rinner or creek boat. Again it's a personal preference. May want to demo the Dagger Mamba 8.1 or 8.6, Liquid Logic Remix 69 or 79, Wavesport Diesel 70 or 80, Pyrahna Burn L, Jackson Zen L. Ace should have demos of all of them (I think they still had some remixes left, they no longer carry Liquid Logic). Demo a few, then look here or on boatertalk.com gear swap for a slightly used boat. You'll save a few hundred bucks you can put towards a paddle, pfd, and helmet. If you're up at Ace this Sunday and want to paddle, post here and I'll take you guys down the upper new. I've got gear to lend.

Me and Renee had a great time and improved our paddling thanks to some patient instruction. Thanks to Tony and everybody that gave up a precious summer weekend to help out. Special thanks to Dan for the one-on-three instruction Sunday. Hope for rain!!
